Composite Item

You can designate an item as a composite item by editing the item (Inventory -> Items) and marking Yes for the Composite Item setting.

After saving the item with Composite Item set to Yes, you can click the Add/Edit Component button to add the sub-pieces to the composite item. You can also get to this edit tool by going to Inventory -> Home -> Manage Build Orders -> Edit BOM Definitions.

You can build composite items using the Inventory -> Home -> Manage Build Orders process.

When a build order is created, Fill it to complete the build order.

You can set up the system so that composite/BOM items are created automatically during shipping by activating the BOM Auto-Create During Shipping add-on.

You can import composite/BOM definitions via a CSV file by activating the Import BOM Definitions and Build Orders add-on and going to Tools -> Import -> Import BOM Definitions.

The inventory reports section has List BOM Definitions where you can view the definitions for an item and List Build Orders where you can view pending or completed orders.

Item Breakdown (splitting an item into sub-pieces)

Where: Inventory -> Items -> Item Breakdown (requires the Item Breakdown feature)

Item Breakdown is the reverse of a build order: it takes a quantity of one stock item and turns it into quantities of several smaller items, for example cutting a full roll or sheet into standard sizes, or splitting a case into single units.

1) Enter the From Item (type part of the name or code, or use the lookup), choose the Breakdown Group that holds the resulting items (the item's Family or its Category) and, with more than one location, the Location. Click Next.

2) The screen shows the from item's on-hand quantity and cost per stock unit, with one row for every item in the chosen group. Enter the Quantity Used of the from item and the Quantity Created of each sub-piece. For weight-based items, Total Starting Weight and Weight Per Piece are checked so the pieces cannot weigh more than the material used.

3) Click Save. On "Item Broken Down Successfully" the from item's on-hand quantity is reduced by the quantity used and each sub-piece's on-hand quantity is increased, with the cost spread across the pieces.
